What are AI citations?

When AI assistants answer a question, they increasingly surface references to external websites alongside their response - either inline links, a "Sources" panel, or footnotes. These are citations: the URLs the model judges as authoritative enough to support its answer.

Citations matter because they form a feedback loop: a website that is frequently cited trains future model versions to keep trusting it, reinforcing which voices dominate AI answers.

Why citations matter for brand visibility

If your brand is mentioned in an AI response but the cited sources are all competitors' websites, your mention is less likely to be positive or detailed. Conversely, if your own website, press coverage, or third-party reviews appear in the citation list, the model has a direct path to surface accurate, favorable information about you.

Citation gaps - topics where your competitors' sources are cited but yours are not - are high-leverage content opportunities. Creating or acquiring content on those specific angles can directly improve your Mention Rate and Share of Voice.

How Mentova tracks sources

Mentova's Sources page shows the domains that appear most frequently in AI citations across your brand's campaigns. For each domain you can see:

  • Coverage - how often it appears in responses related to your topics.
  • Brand alignment - whether citations from that domain tend to mention your brand or a competitor.
  • Source type - editorial (news, blog), directory (comparison sites, review platforms), social (forums, Reddit), or official (brand sites, documentation).

The discovery pipeline also identifies sites that cite competitors on your topics but have not yet referenced your brand - these surface as source gaps in the Opportunities page.

How to use it

  • Prioritize outreach - directories and comparison sites that frequently appear in citations are worth submitting to or optimizing your listing on.
  • Content targeting - editorial gaps (your topic not covered by a trusted publication) are content briefs waiting to be written.
  • Monitor new citations - a new high-authority domain citing you for the first time often correlates with a future Mention Rate increase.

Common pitfall

Not every AI model cites sources openly. Models like GPT-4o may not expose URLs in their chat interface even when citations exist internally. Mentova captures citation data from models and surfaces that support it natively (e.g. Perplexity Sonar) and via its extraction pipeline for others. Coverage will vary by model.
